Wolves victorious over Greyhounds

The Sudbury Wolves and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds continued their northern rivalry Tuesday night, in the last installment of the Bell Challenge Cup Series. After a back and forth battle, the Wolves won the contest by a final score of 5 to 4.

It was the Greyhounds who jumped out to the early 1-0 lead on a goal by Matthew Lyall in the first period.

The Greyhounds increased their lead early in the second frame on a goal by Jordan Nolan at the 5:11 minute mark. The Wolves climbed their way back and took the lead scoring three unanswered goals in the period firstly by Marcus Foligno, with assists from Jared Staal and Gerome Giudice, secondly by John McFarland, assisted by Jake Cardwell and Matt Dias, and lastly by John Kurtz, with an assist from Akim Aliu.

The Wolves widened their lead to two early in the third period on a goal by Eric O'Dell, who was assisted by McFarland and Dias. It was then the Greyhounds turn to fight back tie the contest on goal from Nolan and a power play marker by Michael Quesnele.

The Wolves broke the tie on a goal by O'Dell and assisted by Sheleg at the 12:43 minute mark of the final frame and would hold on for the win by a final score of 5-4.

The Wolves netminder Andrew Loverock faced a few less shots than in recent games, yet still made 35 saves in the winning effort. The Greyhounds goaltender Cody St. Jacques also made 35 saves for the loss.

The Molson Three Stars were Eric O'Dell, Jordan Nolan and Akim Aliu. The Wolves will return to action Friday Jan. 30 when they take on the Niagara IceDogs at the Sudbury Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
