Every October, Ashley HomeStore North in Sudbury renews its commitment to giving back, and to one very worthy group in particular: the Northern Cancer Foundation.

They do this by participating in Pinktober, an exciting promotion that takes place at the same time every year.

The fundraiser is a simple and straightforward way for members of the community to participate and support local research efforts. Whenever a customer makes a purchase at Ashley HomeStore North during the month of October, a portion of the sale is donated to the foundation.

Customers also have the option to donate $10, no purchase necessary, and they can be entered into a draw to win prizes, including one of three $1,000 shopping sprees, a pair of GE laundry machines or a Kingsdown mattress.

Every donation made to the Northern Cancer Foundation supports cancer care, local cancer research and vital equipment purchases at the Shirley and Jim Fielding Northeast Cancer Centre in Sudbury. Donations impact the lives of patients and their families all across Northeastern Ontario.

“Pinktober” is the term that was coined that refers to October as breast cancer awareness month.

The pink ribbon, of course, is the symbol of breast cancer awareness. It spurs people to think about preventative measures and early intervention: two things that significantly increase the odds of breast cancer survival.

The month is also used to remember those who are in the midst of, or who have lost, the fight against breast cancer. While funds are raised for breast cancer awareness year-round, Pinktober provides a concentrated focus and allows businesses and individuals to come together to raise funds to help find a cure.

“Here at Ashley, we are dedicated to helping advance cancer research, for those diagnosed with breast cancer and their loved ones,” says store manager Grant Carriere. “When you shop with us, you’re not just making a purchase, you’re making an impact.”

This year, the store’s Pinktober fundraising promotion managed to raise $16,320 for the foundation.

“This significant contribution would not have been possible without the kindness and passion of our incredible customers. Thank you. Your support is a testament to the strength and compassion that defines our community,” says Carriere.
