Gateway to the Arts and Nick's Place For Us

A tale of resilience and youth empowerment

The year 2020 brought about significant challenges for communities worldwide, particularly for artists and young people in the North seeking a sense of belonging and purpose. From this came two interconnected initiatives, Gateway to the Arts and Nick's Place For Us, both of which were born in response to the needs of local artists and the youth during these trying times.

Gateway to the Arts opened its doors between the first and second COVID-19 lockdowns. Recognizing the need for a place where artists in the North could sell, teach and explore their crafts, this cooperative gallery was conceived. However, the onset of the lockdowns and restrictions posed unexpected challenges. The team behind Gateway to the Arts had to pivot swiftly to pay the rent and keep their vision alive.

One positive twist to their story was the discovery of a large number of young artists searching for a creative home. From ages 16 to 75, this eclectic mix of artists provided the inspiration and motivation needed to survive COVID-19. Today, Gateway to the Arts primarily focuses on the retail side of the gallery, showcasing the vibrant art created by local talents.

During the second annual Christmas Market event, the founders came face to face with the dire situation faced by local youth. A tragic incident, where a family member was fatally stabbed, galvanized their commitment to making a positive change. In memory of the young victim, they started a non-profit youth centre appropriately named "Nick's Place For Us."

An all-inclusive space, the centre offers five nights of programming for individuals aged 13 to 30. It serves as a platform for community events, youth exchange programs and various activities that emphasize the arts as a means of fostering positive interactions, leadership training, and effective communication.

While challenges are a part of their daily existence, both Gateway to the Arts and Nick's Place For Us are dedicated to providing well-run, quality, and age-appropriate programming that is accessible without socioeconomic barriers. Through these initiatives, youth are encouraged to become active participants in their communities and discover that success can take different forms for everyone.

While one might think that the primary beneficiaries are the young people engaging with these programs, the impact extends far beyond. The mission of these initiatives is to equip youth with essential life skills and social skills, enabling them to become active and contributing members of their communities.

Gateway to the Arts and Nick's Place For Us actively engage with other organizations and support various community initiatives. They regularly partner with charities, use fundraising events to raise funds for these organizations, and involve the youth in volunteer opportunities. This not only exposes the youth to the wider world but also helps them gain a sense of accomplishment and connect with professionals and groups. Through these experiences, the youth realize that they are not merely statistics but individuals capable of making a meaningful impact.

The artists associated with Gateway to the Arts play a crucial role in supporting the youth programs. They offer teaching and mentoring, often free or at a low cost, and interact with the young participants, forming positive relationships. The funds raised through the gallery's activities support the costs of programming. The artists are actively involved in events that further the mission of Nick's Place for Us, contributing their expertise and creative talents to enrich the lives of local youth.

One of the most exciting and impactful events organized by Gateway to the Arts is the Arts Battle®️, which takes place in North Bay and Sudbury monthly, and in Thunder Bay bi-monthly. This live competitive painting competition brings together local artists who create their best work in just 20 minutes. The audience closely observes this creative process, and at the end of each round, they vote for their favorite painting in a democratic manner. The winning artworks are then auctioned off.

Gateway to the Arts takes the concept of Arts Battle a step further by partnering with local charities in each community where the event is held. Part of the proceeds from the event goes to these charities, furthering the organization's commitment to giving back to the communities they engage with.

The story of Gateway to the Arts and Nick's Place For Us is one of resilience, creativity and a profound commitment to the well-being of young people and the communities they serve.

Through art, mentorship and community engagement, these initiatives are rewriting the narratives of many youth, showing them that success takes many forms, and their futures are filled with promise.
