A new Personal Support Worker (PSW) program is training Francophones for a health care career. The program, which is set to begin in November, will be offered by Carrefour Options+, Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon’s continuing education school in Sudbury.

Available to students 18 and older, it will allow them to gain the skills and knowledge required in providing care to individuals and families in various settings, including long-term residential institutions and community home care agencies.

"While Northern Ontario is experiencing a shortage in health care personnel, Carrefour Options+ and Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon are proud to offer this program that is so important for families in our area. CSC Nouvelon is the second school board in Ontario to provide this program in French," explains Paul Henry, Director of Education and Secretary-Treasurer at CSC Nouvelon.

"Since this program will be offered in French, our graduates will be well equipped to work in several institutions and agencies in Greater Sudbury and elsewhere that are always looking for qualified bilingual staff," he added.

Tuition fees have been waived for the 2022-2023 school year.

Before their three-month paid internships within local institutions and community agencies, students will undergo three months of theoretical and practical training in the classroom. The program will train students to assist clients of all ages with daily activities like personal care, home management, nutrition as well as family responsibilities and prepare them to meet their emotional, cognitive, spiritual and cultural needs.

Students who successfully complete this program will obtain all certifications and related training to begin their career in the health care field.
