World Breastfeeding Week started in 1992 to generate public awareness. It’s an initiative backed by the World Health Organization, UNICEF and multiple Ministries of Health to spread the word about the many advantages nursing offers moms and babies. This year, it takes place from August 1st to 7th, 2023.

Families with newborns at home know how much it can help to have a comfortable, well-equipped space to nurse in. A few well-chosen furniture pieces can really help to streamline nursing and infant care.

Expectant families and new parents may want to consider adding one of the following to their homes.

A mattress that moves with you

These motion base adjustable mattress foundations will transform your bed and add functionality.

The Head-foot-massage model best adjustable base allows you to customize your ideal night’s rest. Adjust the position of your head, neck and feet with the simple touch of a button on a wireless hand control. New moms will appreciate that they can elevate their legs to increase blood circulation and relieve any pressure on their lower backs.

Being able to raise your upper body so you can sit up comfortably in bed helps with nursing and bonding; it ensures your upper body is well-positioned and your spine is in proper alignment. An especially great feature, particularly for new moms, is the motion-sensor under-bed lighting—as soon as you get out of bed, the floor will be softly illuminated, which is definitely helpful during late night feedings and changes.

A comfy chair to sit in

As a new mom, you’ll be spending lots of time sitting and nursing, snuggling and soothing your baby, so a comfortable and supportive chair is a must. Look for a piece that you can sink into and that suits your dimensions, such as the Wittlich Swivel Glider Recliner. It’s a rocker-recliner that features plush cushions covered in chenille fabric, deep seating, track arms and a complete, 360-degree swivel. The slate colour is quite contemporary and would make a modern addition to any space.

The Kambria Swivel Glider Accent Chair is a great-looking piece that looks right at home in the most elegant living room. Sophisticated and streamlined, it features loose cushions that are reversible and a slope arm. It comes upholstered in “fog”, a light gray polyester fabric.

If you’ve got some extra room, the Lindyn Oversized Swivel Accent Chair is a cosy piece you’ll get years of use from. Because it offers so much extra space, it is perfect for toddlers and young children to use as well—you can snuggle up together or they can have a little nap. The cord upholstery makes a strong style statement, to be sure, and the ivory-coloured fabric is stunningly soft.

A sturdy ottoman so you can elevate your legs

Putting your feet up isn’t just a luxury when you’re breastfeeding, it can help support your legs by boosting blood circulation and combating swelling. Some moms use a low stool or a foot rest, but the most comfortable option, especially for extended periods, is an upholstered ottoman.

The Calderon Ottoman is a tufted, sandstone-coloured piece done in a mid-century style. The textured chenille upholstery rivals the softness of your favourite blanket and feels great to use. It’s quite stylish too, with exposed black metal legs and a chevron pattern on the fabric. Firm but comfortable, it will hold up well to everyday use.

A nightstand or accent table to help keep you organized

The key to managing all of those late night, middle-of-the-night and early morning feedings is to have everything you might need within arm’s reach. Nursing and diaper changes go hand in hand, so keeping all of your supplies at the ready ensures you won’t have to go stumbling around in the darkness looking for what you need.

The Paxberry Two-Drawer Night Stand is a gorgeous, whitewashed piece that suits any bedroom or private space. It’s has a richly distressed whitewash finish and carved effect detailing that makes it a definite standout. It even includes USB device charging, with two slim-profile ports and a power cord.

The Cottonburg Nightstand is quite modern-looking, done in a dove-gray finish with a Calcutta marble top. It has two smooth-gliding drawers lined in a faux linen and large-scale dark-coloured handles. This piece would make a sophisticated addition to any room—and no one would ever know how many practical supplies are hidden inside.

If you aren’t in need of drawers, at least arrange to have a surface nearby where you can place a glass of water to help you stay hydrated (and perhaps a small snack to keep your energy up). The Dorrinson Chairside End Table is a two-toned gray and antiqued white side table done in a modern farmhouse design. It has a two USB charging ports, a fixed lower shelf and a power cord, making it a real multitasker.

Finally, the Briarsboro Accent Tables (Set of 2) don’t take up much space at all, and with their fluid curves instantly add a bit of style. These contemporary, clean-lined nesting tables have black finished metal legs and gray-wash-finished tops. They are extremely functional and have a small footprint.

However you decide to design your space, be sure to prioritize comfort. With this in place, you can focus on making the most of your time with your little one, bonding and getting to know each other.
