Dorothy Boyer is a people person. The tireless volunteer for Sudbury Performance Group (SPG) and numerous other organizations in the area explained,

“Humans are social animals. When I was a nurse for 45 years, I was always working with people. After I retired, I just kept expanding my volunteering and I have met so many wonderful people through that.”

As well as volunteering for SPG, Dorothy volunteers for the Catholic Women’s League at Our Lady of Hope and St. Anthony’s. She is co-chair of the Valley East Community Action Network, is President of the Valley East Seniors Card Club, and is on the board of the Parkside Seniors Centre in downtown Sudbury.

“I like to help out,” explained the friendly senior. “I sell calendars and tickets at the churches, I sell merchandise, 50/50 tickets, and concessions at SPG. I used to sell 50/50 and usher at the Sudbury Wolves games when I was working. I have always enjoyed volunteering.”

Dorothy continued, “I was always at the theatre anyways, and then slowly the friends I went with were no longer with us. The theatre offered a SmartServe program and I decided to do that, and then I just started helping out in other ways. Everyone I’ve met there has been so wonderful, and Mark really values my help. I tend bar for them for the dinner theatre shows too.”

Mark Mannisto, President of Sudbury Performance Group, is effusive in his praise of Dorothy. “Dorothy is a steadfast volunteer not just with Sudbury Performance Group, but also with her church and other organizations. We can ALWAYS count on Dorothy, and she makes things SO easy for us!”

“I love all the organizations I help. With the seniors’ card group, we go out for lunch sometimes, and we just had a lovely Christmas lunch this past week. The community organization, it’s so fun to help put together events for the community, like the Christmas tree lighting, and Canada Day. And the downtown seniors’ group, I really enjoy helping to serve, and helping out with the porcetta bingos,” Dorothy explained.

This busy volunteer has no plans to slow down any time soon. “Christmas is a busy time of year at the church, and the seniors’ groups,” she explained. “And SPG has Rudolph shows all this week. I will be selling whatever they need me to sell, or doing whatever they need me to do, there.”

She paused. “I will do anything front of house, just don’t ask me to go up on stage. I’m not one to toot my own horn or get up there in front of everyone. I just like to help and be with people in my community.”

Sudbury Performance Group has many shows and events coming up, including Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer Dec. 14 to 16, New Years Eve with Dinner, Dancing, and Comedy, and Dinner Theatre featuring the Miss Magnolia Senior Citizen Beauty Pageant in January.
