Spotlight: Providing the highest quality of care to Sudbury patients

Sudbury patients are in good hands with the friendly staff and top-of-the-line technologies at Plexman Dentistry.

Sungwon Han is the newest family member at Plexman Dentistry.

If it's a friendly chat you're after, while getting top quality dental service using the most advanced equipment, then perhaps Dr. Han is exactly what you're looking for.

Dr. Han grew up in Sudbury, after moving to Canada from South Korea.

He attended Laurentian University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and his Master’s degree in chemical sciences.

He later attended University of Detroit Mercy for his degree in Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS).

Sung moved back to the Nickel City last year, joining the Plexman Dentistry team in June.

“I love it here,” he said. “Everyone is super friendly, and I get along very well with Dr. Plexman and the patients are always happy to listen to me talk.”

Dr. Han is an associate dentist, practising under the guidance of Dr. Todd Plexman (over 25 years of experience) who was born and raised in Sudbury.

Todd attended St. Charles College and graduated in 1984. In 1988, Dr. Plexman graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a bachelor's degree in science. He then moved to Winnipeg and attended The University of Manitoba, where he graduated in 1992 with a Doctor of Dental Medicine.

In 2017, Dr. Plexman was awarded a Fellowship in the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

To add to his credentials, Dr. Plexman has been awarded the distinguished fellowship in the prestigious International College of Dentists. He will be inducted in August of this year.

Dr. Plexman said “My practice philosophy is to provide the highest quality of care in an efficient, courteous and friendly environment. Emphasis is placed on professionalism, patient needs and patient involvement in proposed treatment”.

In terms of technology, the use of lasers in dentistry opens the door to perform a wide variety of dental procedures that were once very complex or just not possible.

Lasers provide many benefits including procedures performed on soft tissue may not require sutures (stitches), reducing the healing time of cold sores, allowing wounds to heal faster by reducing the damage to surrounding tissue, gingival recontouring and gingivoplasty.

There are some common procedures in which laser treatment can help, too.

Cold Sores: Low intensity dental lasers reduce healing time and pain associated with cold sores.

Crown Lengthening: Dental lasers can reshape gum tissue (soft tissue laser). Referred to as crown lengthening, such reshaping provides a stronger foundation for the placement of restorations.

Benign tumours: Dental lasers may be used for the painless and suture-free removal of benign tumours situated on the gums, palate, sides of cheeks and lips.

Gummy smile: Dental lasers can reshape gum tissue to expose healthy tooth structure and improve the appearance of a gummy smile.

Soft tissue folds (epulis): Dental lasers may be used for the painless and suture-free removal of soft tissue folds often caused by ill-fitting dentures.

Some of the other technology used at Plexman Dentistry includes:

The VELscope Vx: the most powerful tool available for assisting in the discovery of oral abnormalities. The VELscope's distinctive blue-spectrum light causes the soft tissues of the smooth to naturally fluoresce. Healthy tissues fluoresce in distinctive patterns — patterns that are visibly disrupted by trauma or disease.

Using the VELscope, a wide variety of oral abnormalities can be discovered, often before they're visible to the unassisted eye. Discovering soft tissue abnormalities is particularly important in the fight against oral cancer.

Because the VELscope Vx assists in early detection, cancer can be caught before it has time to spread, potentially saving lives through less invasive, more effective treatment.

On your next dental cleaning, the team at Plexman Dentistry’s office can do a full assessment and evaluation. Call 705-523-6876 to book your next appointment or visit plexmandentistry.com for more information.

Intraoral camera systems: Intraoral cameras are the fastest and most effective way to communicate with your patient. When the patient is able to see the issues, they can make better decisions on their oral care.

CariVu – Caries Detection Device with no radiation: It's a brilliant new approach to discovering caries and cracks. DEXIS CariVu is a compact, portable caries detection device that uses patented transillumination technology to support the identification of occlusal, interproximal and recurrent carious lesions and cracks.

CariVu continues in the long DEXIS tradition of providing intuitive, easy-to-use diagnostic tools for the dental community.

Digital x-rays are a great diagnostic tool provided for our patients.  Digital x-rays have a lower radiation dose, they are fast and Dr. Plexman and Dr. Han consider the digital x-rays to be one of the best tools used at Plexman Dentistry.

iTero Element: No goop, no gagging and no impression trays. It's now done with digital technology that will show you a 3D image of your teeth and your bite immediately after taking the scans. You can breathe and swallow as you normally would, there's no unpleasant taste or smell, and it eliminates the need to retake impressions.

Want straight teeth? Invisalign clear aligners are a virtually invisible solution, so you can smile with confidence. Used to treat a wide range of clinical situations, Invisalign treatment options address simple to complex cases and post-treatment retention. Almost no one will know you’re wearing them unless you tell them.

Teeth are scanned using the iTero element, and then are sent off to have invisible trays made. Once trays are delivered, each tray is worn for 2 weeks at a time. The removable trays allows patients to maintain their oral hygiene easier than the typical brackets. Trays are removed to eat, drink and brush teeth. Straight wire brackets and appliance therapy are also offered at Plexman Dentistry to achieve the smile you are looking for.

Sterilization is of the utmost importance at Plexman Dentistry.

According to the Registered College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario, dentists have an obligation to maintain the standards of practice of the profession and, accordingly, must ensure that recommended infection prevention and control procedures are carried out in their offices.

It is the dentist’s responsibility to ensure that staff are adequately trained in infection prevention and control procedures, and that the necessary supplies and equipment are available, fully operational, up-to-date and routinely monitored for efficiency.

“Here at Plexman Dentistry, we believe in the procedures and have adapted them into our newly renovated sterilization center,” said Dr. Plexman. “From chairside to the sterilization area, our patient’s ultimate care is our main concern. By using the newest technology, not only do we comply with the highest standard of care (as per RCDSO guidelines), but it helps us provide the best care possible for our patients, in a timely manner.”

ZOOM whitening is one of the whitening techniques provided at Plexman Dentistry.  The LED teeth whitening system is widely used all over the world.  Tooth discoloration is one of the most popular questions asked by patients in our practice.  It is common for aging teeth to darken.  The most common causes of staining are smoking, drinking coffee, tea, cola, red wine and certain medications may also contribute to staining.

Sleeping well is essential for maintaining your overall good health.

The Team at Plexman Dentistry often hear patients say “I haven’t been sleeping well, the snoring is keeping me up”.  Sleep Appliances or “snore appliances” are offered at Plexman Dentistry once the patient has had a consult with their physician and a sleep study has been done.  After detailed measurements and a medical, sleep, dental history is completed an appliance can be fabricated. Then everyone is having a restful night sleep.

Plexman Dentistry is located at 2040 Algonquin Rd., Unit 17, in the South End of Sudbury.

NEW PATIENTS WELCOME.
