A baby boy who wouldn't wait to get to hospital was delivered by his parents on a Highway 400 off ramp in the Barrie area.

The parents were en route to hospital Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. after mom went into labour.

They pulled off the 400 at Mapleview where the baby was born in the car during the snowy, cold weather.

"The little fella decided he wasn't waiting," said County of Simcoe Paramedic Services Deputy Chief J.C. Gilbert.

"Side of the road births don't happen that often."

The Paramedic service sent two trucks because there ends up being two patients in these scenarios — mom and baby.

When crews arrived, mom and dad had delivered the baby in their car.

Paramedics thoroughly checked both patients and provided treatment before transporting them to hospital.

"Everybody is happy and healthy," said Gilbert, who said medics are involved in about 9 or 10 deliveries a year.

"It's always a nice day when can have a story like this."
