Barrie man's pet African serval cat on the loose in Tiny Township

OPP re-issues public safety warning

Cassiopeia or 'Cassie,' the African serval cat, is still on the run in Tiny Township, according to Tiny Township Animal Control and the OPP.

There were numerous reports on social media that the cat was home safe and sound, but officials say that's not the case.

"The cat has not been captured," reports veteran Animal Control Officer Randy Bidan, who's been searching for the feline all weekend.

The OPP says the cat is confirmed to be an African serval cat approximately 35 to 40 lbs, 24 inches tall and approximately three feet long.

The animal is larger than a regular domestic cat and is spotted, similar to a lynx.

"If anyone observes this animal, do not approach the animal and call police immediately," the OPP warned in a news release Monday.

The cat -  the pet of a Barrie man, according to Bidan - was the subject of a similar public warning by the OPP on Saturday.

A resident who lives on Tiny Beaches Road North and Forest Circle spotted the cat in his backyard around 8 p.m. Friday and called police.

The pet, who is apparently not used to being outside, escaped Friday after a worker doing renovations at an investment property failed to close the door, Bidan said,

The owner told officials that he hopes to lure Cassie back into captivity with a serving of tuna, one of the main staples of the animal's diet.

Animal Control and police say If anyone sees the animal, they are asked to keep their distance and call police immediately at 1-888-310-1122.
