Introducing Phoenix-Rose.

Procyon Wildlife launched a 'baby needs a name contest' and chose the handle out of countless suggestions.

"We were so impressed with the wonderful submissions put forward and with the compassionate comments that were given," according to a post on the centre's Facebook.

"After much consideration the name Phoenix-Rose has been chosen as the winning entry as she has indeed risen from the ashes and the name Rose makes the name feminine as our little burn victim is a girl."

Jenny Jean Crawford submitted the winning name.

The three-month-old raccoon was found near Huronia North Park at Big Bay Point and Huronia Rd. on Sunday, Aug. 6 with severe burns to one side of her body, face, arms and belly.

It's believed a flammable liquid had been thrown on her.

A Barrie resident took the three-month-old raccoon to the Procyon Wildlife Centre in Beeton.

Barrie Police are trying to track down the person responsible.

Procyon Wildlife volunteers said it was the worse case of cruetly they had ever seen inflicted on a helpless baby animal.

The good news is that Pheonix-Rose is healing under the compassionate care at the centre.

The resilient creature will be there for the winter and released back into the wild possibly in April.

A non-profit, Vancouver-based wildlife sanctuary, the Fur-Bearers,  is offering up a $1,000 reward for tips leadng to the person responsible for the burns.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Barrie Police Service at 705-725-7025, ext. 2926, [email protected] or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, leave an anonymous tip online at www.tipsubmit.com
