Cops chase U-Haul truck down Highway 17

Surely the driver of a U-Haul truck didn't think he could outrun the police...but he tried...for a while!

On Friday, Oct. 27, the West Nipissing Police Service received a theft complaint from a local merchant.

Police were told that the thieves had fled and that they were escaping in a U-Haul truck.

Police saw the truck travelling westbound on Highway 17 then noticed it turn back into Sturgeon Falls on Drive-In road.

Two passengers jumped from the vehicle and were immediately arrested.

The vehicle fled the area but was later seen travelling in Sturgeon Falls.

Other police units tried to stop the U-Haul, however, the driver refused to stop and a police chase started.

Police pursued the vehicle west bound along Highway 17, however due to the suspect's erratic driving the chase was stopped.

The vehicle was later seen in Verner and when police tried to stop it the driver escaped and proceeded westbound.

Police again discontinued their pursuit but radioed other police agencies.

The U-Haul truck travelled across several jurisdictions and engaged in a number of police in pursuits. It was was eventually stopped in the Orillia area where the male driver was arrested.

The truck was searched and police located in excess of $5,000 worth of stolen merchandise.

Three men now face a variety of charges. The investigation is ongoing.
