The OPP is reminding parents that there is a curfew in place in Ontario for children under the age of 16.

As summer holidays provide more freedom and therefore more opportunities for mischief, especially after the sun goes down, the OPP have issued a release reminding parents of the curfew.

Typically, police see a spike in things like vandalism, mischief, shoplifting, loitering, trespassing, under-age drinking, field parties and general noise complaints.

There are curfew provisions under the Child and Family Services Act. Under the act, no parent of a child less than 16 years of age shall permit the child to loiter in a public place between midnight and 6 a.m. This offence is punishable by fine if warranted and youth can be apprehended by police without warrant and taken to their parent/caregiver.
