No spilling or leaking of hazardous materials occurred as a result of a multi-car train derailment near Blind River, says the chief of the fire service which responded.
Frank Gionette, fire chief for the Mississaugi First Nation, said the call for the derailment came in about 7 p.m. Sunday night.
Gionette said the derailment may have occurred due to a break in the track and none of the cars were loaded with hazardous materials.
“It was eight cars that left the track, loaded with steel rolls,” said Gionette.
The derailment occurred about 50 feet from the highway, said Gionette, and did not require a road closure.
Gionette said the clean up will be the responsibility of the railway.
“They are going to be cleaning up pretty soon,” he said.
