There are just two days until the biggest multi-sport event in Orillia’s history begins. With that in mind, OrilliaMatters is publishing a daily countdown to help you get ready for the 2018 Ontario Winter Games.

Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018

In just two days, the highly-anticipated 2018 Ontario Winter Games will officially begin with an ambitious, action-packed opening ceremony. The free, 90-minute kickoff event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Couchiching Beach Park on Thursday.

More than 3,000 athletes, coaches and managers, representing the 25 different sports of this year’s massive four-day event, will parade into the park, where they will be officially welcomed by Orillia Mayor Steve Clarke. The Drumming Circle of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation will perform a traditional welcome song, while a torch from their sacred fire is carried in to light the official Ontario Winter Games cauldron.

Bleeker, Orillia’s very own Juno-nominated band, will headline the entertainment portion of the event. Comprised of Cole Perkins on guitar and Mike Van Dyk on bass, with Taylor Perkins handling vocals, Bleeker is an alt rock band that has a devoted following across Canada. The opening ceremonies will also include a performance by the precision drumline, Cadre.

The festivities will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display.

If you’re planning to attend, please note the opening ceremonies and venue are a smoke- and vape-free event. The opening ceremony will also necessitate road closures. The following roads will be closed from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.: Bay Street from Borland Street East to Jarvis Street; Jarvis Street from Bay Street to Canice Street; Canice Street from Jarvis Street to the Terry Fox Circle; and access to Canice Street from Brant Street East

This will also result in a temporary Orillia Transit detour on the Laclie Route.

Attendance at all venues, thanks to sponsors, is free.
