THUNDER BAY -- A Thunder Bay man has been charged under the OSPCA Act for leaving his dog in a hot car.

The Thunder Bay and District Humane Society began a crackdown last year on such violations.

On July 22, investigators received a tip from a concerned on-looker, a Shephard-type dog showing signs of heat distress had been left in vehicle on the city's north end, off of Cumberland Street.

They responded immediately and found the temperature inside the vehicle was 44 degrees Celsius.

The owner was located and was ordered to seek veterinarian care for his dog immediately.

He was recently charged with failure to provide care for general welfare, permitting distress, and causing distress.

Humane Society Investigator Jeremy Gardiner said the dog remains with his owner.

“In this case the person did bring it to the vet, and it did receive medical care,” he said.

“In some cases if we can’t locate an owner then we can remove the animal, and there is only three ways we can remove an animal through the OSPCA act.”

Gardiner said the accused could face up to 2 years in jail, or a fine of up to $60,000.
