Timmins Police Service has arrested a 41-year-old man for murder in the case of human remains found in a burned vehicle in the Northern Ontario city.

Richard (“Ricky”) Green of Schumacher was arrested “without incident” late Tuesday afternoon, police said.

He has been charged with second degree murder, indignity to a dead body, arson and theft of a motor vehicle.

The charges stem from a May 18 incident where Timmins police were called to the scene of a vehicle fire in the Gold Centre area of the city. After the flames were put out, police say human remains were located inside the car.

It is hoped a post-mortem examination will confirm the identity of the victim.

“Although the identity of the deceased is not officially confirmed, investigators believe that the suspect and the person who is believed to be the deceased were known to each other. This is not a random act,” Staff Sgt. Danny Charest told Timmins media.

Green remains in custody awaiting a determination regarding his first appearance date in court, said a press release from police. Those exact details have yet to be finalized and are being determined at present.

This is the second vehicle fire with human remains located inside in Timmins in the past month.

April 20, the bodies of the Robitaille-Gagnon family were located at the scene of vehicle fire on Price Road. Three of the victims were found inside the car, while another was found nearby.

“We have no reason to believe that there is a connection whatsoever,” said Charest.

Anyone with information relating to the crime should call Timmins Police at 705-264-1201 or Crime Stoppers at 705-268-8477.
