Corner store beer and wine back on the lobbying agenda

A weekly roundup of lobbying registrations in Ontario
cp27606
Ontario Premier Doug Ford, centre, Vic Fedeli, left, and Todd Smith announce the buck-a-beer plan at Barley Days brewery in Picton, Ont. on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This article originally appeared on The Trillium, a new Village Media website devoted exclusively to covering provincial politics at Queen’s Park.

The premier's promise to bring beer and wine to corner stores is back on the agenda, according to the province's lobbyist registry.

The Convenience Industry Council of Canada, which represent convenience retailers, has

owned by three big conglomerates.”

Atlas lobbyist Cody Mallette, a former permier's office staffer, has registered on behalf of the convenience store group seeking "the expansion of beer and wine sales and (to work) with the government to address illegal tobacco sales." The group also has registrations with Summa Strategies lobbyists with the same goal.

It's part of a flurry of activity for the relatively new firm. and Mallette. Their goal is to influence "the consideration, implementation and impact of new provincial green standards (as it relates to construction standards) on the residential construction sector in Ontario."

And another new Atlas registration is Empire Company Ltd., the parent company of the Sobeys grocery chain. Its goal is "to engage the Government of Ontario on the Blue Box Regulation, which falls under the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act. Our primary objective is to work towards the establishment of a comprehensive industry-wide solution for the Blue Box program. In pursuit of this goal, we aim to collaborate with government officials, industry peers, associations, and other partners.

Meanwhile, calls are growing for the province to establish a provincial marine transportation strategy. The Ontario Marine Council registered with Pathway Group to "provide an industry perspective into the establishment and subsequent operations of the Ontario Marine Transportation Strategy." A recent article in the Welland Tribune notes the Ministry of Transportation recently held a roundtable about the first phase of developing just such a plan.
