It's a new year and that means there's a big change travellers need to keep in mind.

As of January 1, the Ontario Health Insurance Plan no longer covers any portion of out-of-country medical expenses.

As a result, if you're planning to leave the country any time soon, you'll need to review your travel insurance coverage.

CAA South Central Ontario is out with some tips, like speaking with a knowledgeable travel advisor that understands your needs.

In a release, the organization said you shouldn't base your insurance decisions on price alone, but rather look at what coverage is most important for your circumstances.

"Travel insurance protects from unexpected and costly emergencies and it's important to evaluate available coverage, based on personal needs, to determine how to best safeguard you and your family. This is even more important now that there is no coverage through OHIP," said Elliott Silverstein, CAA's director of government relations.

When speaking with that advisor we suggested earlier, ask lots of questions - as it's better to be safe than sorry.

If you're unsure of what to ask, consider these:

What are the eligibility and exclusions?

What is the pre-existing and stability clause?

What are the benefit limits?

How many days am I covered?

Is there a deductible?

Do they offer upfront payment if a claim occurs?

Also a reminder, emergency travel medical insurance may require you to complete a health questionnaire. It's important to be honest, as it will determine your premium - not the actual coverage.
