The Province of Ontario is giving the City of Greater Sudbury $60,000 to “enhance seating and shade at multiple park locations,” according to a media release.

Shaded seating will be added at up to four park locations where outdoor court revitalization has recently been completed.

“Inclusive communities help people with disabilities and seniors with mobility issues take part in community life by removing barriers,” Seniors and Accessibility Minister Raymond Cho said in a media release issued by the province.

“Through the Inclusive Community Grants Program, we are reducing social isolation and creating new opportunities for Ontarians to stay active, healthy and independent.”

In the release, Northern Development Minister Greg Rickford said it’s important for communities to have accessible spaces “residents of all ages and abilities can enjoy.”

Sites have been identified in consultation with the City’s Older Adult Advisory Panel and with consideration of municipal programs and policies, geographical diversity and lack of existing seating, according to the release.

“Enhanced shaded seating will encourage greater participation in our public parks for people of all ages and abilities,” Mayor Paul Lefebvre said. “This project is a wonderful example of how the Province, the municipality and dedicated residents can work together to create a more accessible and inclusive community for all.”
