Quick — when was the last time you had a bit of information you wanted to “get out there” to the media? You had a story to tell but wasn’t quite sure who to call. Or you called someone in the media but then didn’t ever see a story in the paper or on TV.
One of the most frustrating things for readers and reporters alike is the reality that news coverage is not comprehensive enough. Stories go untold — both good and bad — each and every day.
Albert Einstein has been quoted as saying “the world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.”
So for those dear readers who are spurred into action and want to report on stories from their community, Northern Life has a wonderful New Years present. It’s called myNews and it’s located at NorthernLife.ca/mynews, or you can simply click through the myNews icon on the Northern Life.ca home page.
MyNews is a user-friendly portal through which one can upload stories and pictures. It’s a one-stop destination for posting the community news and pictures that matter to you. Whether you are an individual or an organization, myNews is the spot on the web to get your message out about your little corner of Greater Sudbury.
Joining is easy. Simply enter a screen name and a password and you’re set to start posting your stuff. Once you upload your photo and/or story, it is forwarded to Northern Life editors, who will check the submission for any harmful content. After that, your story is published to the myNews site. Stories and pictures submitted by community organizations, who must fill out a slightly more detailed registration form, will bypass the editors and see the content published immediately.
The myNews site is an ideal venue for people looking to promote anything from school events and church fundraisers to cheque donations and celebrations. Do you belong to a club or group that has something interesting to share with the community? The possibilities are endless: think scouts, guides, amateur sports, 4-H clubs, photography groups, retiree associations, and more. Anywhere people gather and interact with their community there is news that should be shared.
We’re really excited about this new part of NorthernLife.ca’s web site. Now, when readers call looking for news coverage that we simply cannot provide, we have some excellent options for them.
Of course, there will be some fine tuning along the way. The beauty of the web is that it is a dynamic canvas on which we can play, grow and explore. For those of us in the news reporting field, innovation is critical. And so, it is an amazing honour to hold out our virtual hand and invite you to participate in helping report the news.
As Star Wars movie icon, Yoda, said, “Do, or do not. There is no try.”
