Hey sports fans, it's time to lift the lid off the local scene and see what's been brewing with our teams and athletes.
There was no shortage of excitement, courtesy of two high
school teams and one midget hockey club, this past weekend.
The big thrill of the weekend came as the Lockerby boys'
curling squad won the 2007 OFSAA Curling Championship in
Oakville.
It was the icing on the cake for the Vikings team as they went
on quite a romp all season long.
It started in the regular season as Lockerby cruised through
the competition, posting an impressive 10-1-1 record.
They then rocked the competition in the city playoffs, culminating with a big 4-3 win over the Lasalle Lancers in the city championship. Lasalle had gone undefeated all season with an 11-0-1 record in the regular season.
At the NOSSA championship, Lockerby squashed all other teams,
racking up a perfect 5-0 record en route to the Northern
Ontario title.
This past weekend, the Vikings rolled through the best in the
province as they went 7-0 overall to win the Ontario title.
Lockerby thumped a team from Wallaceberg District secondary
School 7-3 in the championship final.
With their wins at the city championships, as well at NOSSA and
OFSAA, the Lockerby boys finished their season going unbeaten
in their last 14 games.
The boys' squad consisted of skip Evan Lilly, vice Joey
Lanthier, second Peter Myslik, lead Cory Belzile and fifth
Scott Tremblay.
Lilly's sister, Kenrda, was also in action, competing for the
Lockerby girls' team at OFSAA as well.
Unfortunately, Kendra couldn't duplicate her brother's magic.
The girls' curling team went 3-1 in the round robin, but lost
in the quarter-final game of the playoffs to the St. Mary 'A'
team 5-3.
That team featured skip Kendra, vice Amanda Gates, second
Courtney Ptok, lead Kyla Nadorozny and fifth Stephanie Sindori.
In hockey, the St. Charles College senior boys' hockey team
received a rude welcoming to the 2007 A/AA OFSAA Championship
in Oshawa. The boys had gone through adversity and setbacks to
make it to the provincial championship, losing 4-3 in the
fourth overtime in the final city championship game to Lasalle,
but bounced back to win NOSSA a few days later. St. Charles
lost all four of their round robin games and missed the playoff
round.
The Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves season came to a screeching
halt on Saturday night at the Countryside Arena.
Sudbury was in tough against the Sault Ste. Marie North Stars
in the bid to become the GNML league champion.
Sudbury dropped the first two games in Sault Ste. Marie, by the scores of 4-3 and 6-5. Sudbury put up a valiant effort Saturday night in front of a packed house, but lost 4-3 in overtime, losing the series in three straight games.
Still, I tip my hat to rookie coach Peter Michelutti Jr. and
company for providing another thrilling season of hockey.
Sudbury marched its way to a record of 28-7-0-1 and second
overall in the GNML.
I also have to salute the season the Valley East Cobras had in
the GNML. It was one of their best seasons ever as they forged
a record of 21-12-2-1. Sudbury bounced the Cobras from the
playoffs in the second round in three straight games. Valley
East also featured two of the top six scorers in the league -
Jamie Haines (61 points and third overall) and Alex Fiset (57
points and sixth overall).
