Stanley Cup in Azilda on Friday

Hey sports fans, it's time to lift the lid off the local scene and see what's cooking up. Hockey Sudbury's Randy Carlyle and the Stanley Cup will be in Azilda this Friday at the Dr. Edgar Leclair community centre.

Hey sports fans, it's time to lift the lid off the local scene and see what's cooking up.

Hockey

Sudbury's Randy Carlyle and the Stanley Cup will be in Azilda this Friday at the Dr. Edgar Leclair community centre. Carlyle, a former star defenceman for the Sudbury Wolves in the 70s, won professional hockey's top prize this past June as head coach of the Anaheim Ducks. The cup will be shown off from 11 am until 3:30 pm.

The Ducks beat the Ottawa Senators in five games to win Lord Stanley's mug. Carlyle has been the head coach of the Ducks for the past two seasons and has forged a record of 91-47-0-26. It has been three years since a Sudbury native has brought the Stanley Cup to the Nickel City.  Ryan Belec brought the trophy to Sudbury back in 2004 after the Tampa Bay Lightning won it. Belec served as an assistant to the general manager at the time.

Even though Belec wasn't a player or coach, his visit with the cup caused a fever and attracted many interested hockey fans to Tom Davies Square for pictures and autographs. Hundreds lined up for hours to have their picture taken with the trophy. Fans attending the Carlyle Cup show might want to give themselves some extra time to take in the event because it could, and probably will, be busy.

The Pro Players Hockey School is accepting registrations for the 2007 Hockey School, which will be held Aug. 20 to 24 at the Val Caron arena.

Pro Players Hockey School features Andrew Brunette of the Colorado Avalanche and Steve Richardson, school co-ordinator and past professional coach and player, as well as local OHL and pro hockey players.

Brunette fought tooth-and-nail to get where he is today in the NHL. He was a late pick in the OHL and the NHL and was never really given many chances to make his mark. Brunette has now played over 700 games and is closing in on 500 points.

The school is open to youth between the ages of six and 16. The cost is $165 for the week, per participant.

Soccer

Lo-Ellen Park soccer defender Natasha San Cartier has landed a lucrative NCAA Division I scholarship.

Cartier has secured a four-year scholarship, estimated to be worth over $150,000, to play for Indiana State University. Cartier has been a top player in the high school league over the past few years and also played for the Sudbury Canadians soccer program.

She's also a highly accomplished track and field runner, who was a top performer in hurdles events.  Cartier is poised and fast. She will make an impact with Indiana and continues the fine tradition of Sudbury soccer programs producing top talent that gets snatched up by NCAA and CIS schools across North America.
Boxing

Third time wasn't the charm for local boxer Terry Witzu at the 2007 Ringside World Boxing Championships.

Witzu, 57, fought his way to the finals of the Masters heavyweight class before losing a split decision to a scrapper by the name of John O'Brien.

This marks Witzu's third straight silver medal at the highly attended event in Kansas City. Some 1,500 boxers from around the globe participated in the event. Witzu has been boxing competitively for the last five years and holds the distinction of being the oldest registered heavyweight boxer in the country. Witzu defines the term all-out. Every time he goes to fight he says the same thing "I'm going to win or I'm coming home in a body bag." This attitude is the reason he does so well against some tough competition.

Kayaking

Daniel Sabau, of the Sudbury Canoe Club, has qualified for the national championships in the K1 (one-person kayak) division after a strong showing at the Western Ontario Championships in Welland from Aug. 4 to 5.

Sabau will compete at nationals in Ottawa from Aug. 22 to 26 in the midget mens' 1000-metre and 6000-m races.
Sabau will also compete in the K2 (two-person kayak) 1000-m race with Gabriel Caron. Sabau and Caron will then join Ian Chappell and Emilio Frometa for the K4 (four-person kayak) 1000-m race.

The K2 pee wee team of Eric Brunatti and Vic Sabau qualified to compete in the provincial championships, which will occur in Sydenham this Saturday.

Joining them will be Emilio Frometa in bantam K1, Domenica Frometa and Heather Webb in women's K2 (two-person kayak) and both in women's K1 and the bantam boys' team of Emilio Frometa, Ian Chappell, Vic Sabau and Eric Brunatti.
