Oscar’s Grill will come alive with music on Thurs, Sept. 8 for the Opening Gala of the Jazz Sudbury Festival. Special guest Elena Kapeleris will be performing with Sudbury’s own Borealis Quartet at Oscar’s Grill beginning at 8:30 p.m.
“It’s a beautiful evening that celebrates the spirit of the festival and everyone that makes it possible,” said festival manager Marc Gareau. “We gather with the artists, organizers, staff, sponsors, and the public to take in some amazing music.”
Tickets for the Opening Gala are $10 at the door.
Kapeleris is a Toronto-based saxophonist, vocalist, and composer and former student of world renowned saxophonist Pat LaBarbera. Kapeleris will also be performing with headliner Mike Malone on Fri, Sept. 9th and with Rita Chiarelli on Sat, Sept. 10 as part of her all-star band Sweet Loretta.
The Opening Gala marks the official kick-off of the eighth annual 2016 Jazz Sudbury Festival. The Jazz Sudbury Festival holds main stage events on the nights of Sept. 9 and Sept. 10 with after-hours performances at the Speakeasy and Townehouse.
Other Jazz Sudbury Festival programming includes Jazz in the Park, a free family day in Memorial Park on Sat, Sept, 10 from noon to 4 p.m. and the much-loved Jazz Walk event led by special guests Turbo Street Funk.
This year’s festival boasts a stellar and award-winning lineup with many powerful women in jazz including Juno award winning artist Jully Black and multiple Maple Blues award winner Rita Chiarelli.
