ATV driver dies after colliding with parked car in Hanmer
Greater Sudbury Police have confirmed that the driver an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) which struck an unoccupied, parked vehicle early Sunday morning has succumbed to his injuries. The incident occurred on Michelle Drive in Hanmer.
Yearling moose on the loose in downtown Sudbury
Greater Sudbury police reported spotting two yearling moose near downtown Sudbury around 11:30 p.m. Saturday night. Residents are asked to give the moose plenty of room if they are spotted and not attempt to approach the animals. Police hope the animals will return to the forest of their own volition.
20 loved ones lost: Hannah Tooktoo's cross-Canada ride and the Indigenous suicide crisis
A journey that started nearly 50 days ago in Vancouver is nearing its end as 24-year-old Hannah Tooktoo's cross-Canada bike ride stopped in Sudbury on Aug. 1. Tooktoo's ride is one of self-healing and education, she told Sudbury.com during a visit to the Shkagamik-Kwe, as she has been spreading the message that there needs to be more attention paid to and more services for mental health support in Inuit and Indigenous communities. RCMP sends divers to Manitoba river in hunt for men wanted in B.C. deaths
Mounties say divers will arrive in northern Manitoba tonight in the ongoing search for two British Columbia murder suspects. RCMP say in a news release that members of their underwater recovery team are expected to begin searching a section of the Nelson River, which is northeast of Gillam, on Sunday. The area around Gillam has been the focus for more than a week in the hunt for Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, and Kam McLeod, 19, who are accused of killing one person and suspected in the deaths of two others last month in B.C. 'Nowhere to go.' Iqaluit homeless stay in shacks, old boats amid housing crisis
Nushupiq Kilabuk wakes up every day in a shack on the shores Frobisher Bay in Iqaluit with only a lantern and a camping stove to keep him warm — but he says he's one of the lucky ones. Next to his shack, which he built himself a little over four years ago, there are two abandoned boats. People have been sleeping in and under these boats at night — often several people crowded together to escape the elements. That's why Kilabuk believes he's fortunate for his shack. This weekend, locals Tracy Hayes and John Macdonald hosted the first XTERRA: Conquer the Crater event at Kivi Park in support of the Northern Cancer Foundation's Miles Against Cancer fund. The three-day event welcomed more than 200 athletes from Sudbury and beyond, who competed in a variety of events for the chance to be one of 10 racers invited to the XTERRA World Championships held Oct. 31 in Maui, Hawaii. The Miles Against Cancer fund was started by Hayes and Macdonald in honour of their son Malcolm, to alleviate some of the financial burdens Northern Ontario families face when having to travel for care. Celebrating community at the 101st Capreol Days
One hundred and one years older and wiser, Capreol Days returned to the quiet streets of Sudbury's railroad community this past weekend, with an even greater variety of food and festivities. Year-after-year the event attracts hundreds, regardless of the weather said Lynn Mazzuca, chair of the organizing board of directors, many of whom lived in Capreol at some point or another. To maintain this popularity, Mazzucca said her organizing committee does all they can to ensure this returning crowd finds new, exciting activities suitable for the whole family, such as this year's escape rooms. The course hosted trail run competitors in the morning and kids of steel duathlon athletes in the afternoon, who each put their unique footprint on this blossoming tradition. Four fires burning in the Northeast, the latest found Saturday
There were four active forest fires at the time of the latest fire situation update by Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services, the latest discovered Saturday afternoon near Red Pine Lake. The forest fire hazard ranges from moderate to high across the central and southern portion of the region, with an isolated area northeast of Ranger Lake showing an extreme hazard and most of the northern part of the region showing a low to moderate hazard. Mainly cloudy skies in the forecast today and a high of 25, feeling like 30 with the humidex. There is a 30 per cent chance of showers throughout the day, coupled with a risk of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Showers expected overnight with a risk of thunderstorms, and temperatures nearing a low of 15.
