Ontario health units report 340 new COVID-19 cases, recoveries
Ontario public health units reported a total of 340 new COVID-19 cases and 340 resolutions since Saturday, which along with an additional 23 deaths, brings the total number of active cases in the province to 3,412. Three of these presumed recoveries were residents of Northern Ontario, one living within the service area of the Porcupine Health Unit and two more within that of the Thunder Bay District Health Unit. COVID-19 testing criteria updated with symptoms specific to children, elderly
The Ministry of Health has updated the case definition and symptoms for COVID-19 testing to remove some and add other criteria, specific to children, seniors and those with developmental delays. Health Sciences North will be adopting these new criteria Saturday as they continue to ramp up testing in line with provincial efforts to understand and control the virus' transmission. Canada Child Benefit to be increased July 20, says Trudeau
The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) will be increased July 20 for the remainder of the 2020-21 benefit year, to support families in their living costs and those associated with raising children. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the change Saturday during his latest public address at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, along with additional federal funding and medical advancements related to COVID-19. Miners for Cancer donates $100K to NCF COVID-19 Support Fund
Miners for Cancer donated $100,000 to the Northern Cancer Foundation’s (NCF) COVID-19 Support Fund Friday, to help frontline workers in their care of the community’s most vulnerable patients. Funds will be used to purchase 58 new and vital Infusion System Full IV-EHR Interoperability pumps to deliver IV fluids, blood infusions and drug therapies to patients undergoing cancer treatment, said a release from the volunteer-based organization. Police close Howey Drive in response to a woman in crisis
Greater Sudbury Police responded to reports of a woman in crisis on Howey Drive on Sunday*, leading to the temporary closure of the roadway. Around 10:20 a.m. that morning, a woman from the area climbed onto her roof in what police have described as a crisis situation. No injuries were sustained. Read the full story here.
Wikwemikong driver, passenger charged following a traffic stop in Espanola
Members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged a driver and passenger from Wikwemikong First Nation last week, following a traffic stop in the Town of Espanola. Police conducted the stop on Highway 6 just before 8:30 p.m. on May 13, where they found the driver to be in possession of more than one licence, none of which were valid to operate the vehicle in question. Mix of sun and cloud to close out the long weekend
There is a mix of sun and cloud promised for Monday and a high of 17 C. Northeast 20 km/h wind gusting to 40 km/h is not expected to produce a notable wind chill but is sure to bring a few goosebumps. Clouds are expected to clear by the evening and wind to become light. Overnight temperatures to float around a low of 7 C.
