Ontario health units report 340 new COVID-19 cases, recoveries

Ontario public health units reported a total of 340 new COVID-19 cases and 340 resolutions since Saturday, which along with an additional 23 deaths, brings the total number of active cases in the province to 3,412.

Three of these presumed recoveries were residents of Northern Ontario, one living within the service area of the Porcupine Health Unit and two more within that of the Thunder Bay District Health Unit. This brings the total number of active cases in the region down to 22, following 253 resolutions and 10 deaths.

These cases have been identified through the 37,562 tests conducted in Northern Ontario since the pandemic began, including 9,638 by Public Health Sudbury and District (PHSD). 

PHSD has identified 64 cases in the district through this testing, 59 of whom have recovered, and two have died. 

Provincewide there are currently 3,412 active cases of the 22,653 logged as of May 17 at 10:30 a.m., following 17,360 resolutions and 1,881 deaths. Statistics of which, were found through 544,826 tests, up 16,217 since Saturday. 

Of the active cases, 934 are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, including 171 in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and 129 in ICU on a ventilator. None of these active cases were in the care of Health Sciences North as of May 15 but there were 18 unconfirmed cases in various departments as per their latest update. 

Since the last report by Sudbury.com, there have been five new COVID-19 outbreaks at long-term care (LTC) homes contributing to provincial statistics. This brings the total number of active outbreaks to 189, following the resolution of 82.

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care have reported 2,500 active cases among LTC residents or patients in relation to these outbreaks as well as 1,631 cases among LTC staff. Since the pandemic began, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of the 1,388 LTC residents or patients and five LTC employees. 

These provincial statistics have contributed to a nationwide total of 76,933 confirmed and 11 presumptive cases of COVID-19 as of May 17 at 1:43 p.m., including 38,476 resolutions and 5,781 deaths.
