Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your day.

Two moose struck by vehicles in two days:

Sudbury OPP are reminding motorists to be aware of wildlife hazards after a pair of collisions involving moose and motor vehicles last week. On Jan. 7, at approximately 6:40 p.m., Sudbury OPP responded to a car versus moose collision on Highway 144 in Greater Sudbury. A motorist travelling northbound on Hwy 144 struck a moose. The motorist suffered no injuries and her vehicle was towed from the scene. This motorist was able to react and apply the brakes prior to striking the moose which is likely the reason she wasn't injured. On Jan. 8, at around 1:30 a.m. Sudbury OPP again responded to a collision involving a moose and a vehicle when a tractor trailor struck a mooose while travelling southbound on Highway 69. The tractor trailor operator suffered no injuries and the vehicle was towed from the scene. The OPP are reminding motorists of wildlife hazards at all hours of the day but most commonly at dusk and dawn. Reducing your speed can significantly increase your reaction time.

'15 years ago I had a gun in my mouth': Fleury talks mental health at LU next week:

Laurentian University will welcome retired NHLer Theoren Fleury on Jan. 24 for a talk on mental health. Fleury has been touring North America of late, delivering his lecture entitled "The Power of Me Too". Fleury co-wrote “Playing with Fire,” a best-selling autobiography released in October 2009, in which he revealed that he had been sexually abused by former coach Graham James. "As we all know, the biggest epidemic in the world today is trauma, mental health and addiction," said Fleury. "It's incredibly important for those of us who are battling these things to have a chance to share these stories." The talk at Laurentian is slated for Jan. 24 and the format of the evening is open to the audience. The lecture gets underway at 7:30 p.m. at the Laurentian University Fraser Auditorium. Suspended driver caught with unsealed liquor in his vehicle:

A 34-year-old man from Severn Township had his vehicle towed and his licence suspended after Sudbury OPP responded to a traffic complaint on Highway 69 in the early hours of Jan. 5. At approximately 1 a.m., members of the Sudbury (Noelville) OPP detachment responded to a complaint of erratic driving on Highway 69 in the Municipality of French River. Police located the vehicle on Highway 69 approaching Sudbury. As a result of the investigation, the man was charged with driving while under suspension and Driving Motor Vehicle with Unsealed Container of Liquor. The driver was also served with a seven day driver's licence suspension for registering a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) in the "Warn Range" of .05 to .08. The vehicle was towed from the scene and the driver is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury.

Sudburians invited to help shape Ontario's health care system:

Sudbury residents are being invited to join the conversation on how important health data should be used to improving the province's health care system. ICES (Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences) opened their sixth and final satellite location at Health Sciences North last September, forming ICES North, a partnership among Health Sciences North Research Institute, Laurentian University and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. ICES North will allow researchers to answer questions with a northern focus. The advisory council will be leaned on to provide a northern perspective, and ICES North will be able to encourage and work with researchers to answer questions with a Northern Ontario focus. Health data is used largely in research projects and ICES North will be able to look over how many people had a certain condition, how many received care for that condition, and how many received follow up care for that condition.
