Good Morning, Sudbury! Here are seven stories to start your day

summer 2016
Sudbury has turned the corner and we're officially starting to see the first signs of summer. The Weather Network released its summer forecast on May 28, and most of Canada will see a warmer summer than last year. The same holds true for Sudbury, but in a somewhat limited capacity. Over the entirety of the 2018 summer, Sudbury will be very close to its seasonal average, with the early months being slightly warmer than average and the later months being a bit cooler. The Weather Network is projecting average highs of 22 degrees C for June, 25 for July, and 23 for August. The evening lows will be 11, 13.5, and 12.5 for those three months respectively. Check out the full forecast.

Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your day.

Late spring will give way to a warm start to the summer:

Via Rail cancels service between Sudbury and White River as CP Rail strike looms:

Via Rail Canada has cancelled some service in Northern Ontario because of a strike notice given to Canadian Pacific Railway by its unions. The unions representing train operators and signalling workers — the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers — have given CP Rail notice that they plan to strike as of 10 p.m. EDT Tuesday. Via is cancelling passenger rail service starting Tuesday morning in Ontario between Sudbury and White River. The 9 a.m. train departing Sudbury and Wednesday morning train leaving White River at 7 a.m. are cancelled. Via Rail says it is contacting customers with reservations. Other customers can cancel or change the date of travel at no additional charge.

Police make appeal in case of girl, 2, who disappeared from Grundy Lake park in 1966:

Ontario Provincial Police are appealing to anyone with information about the disappearance of a young girl more than 50 years ago to come forward. Police say Diane Prevost was reported missing in Grundy Lake Provincial Park, about 90 kilometres southeast of Sudbury, Ont., on Sept. 17, 1966. They say the two-year-old was afraid of the water and had been playing in the sand while her father fished on the dock and her siblings swam in the lake. Police say when the girl asked to return to the trailer at the campsite, which was approximately 150 metres from the beach, her father asked her to wait a moment while he reeled in his line. When he turned to take her back to the campsite, the girl was no longer on the beach and extensive searches of the park and the lake that spanned more than a month found no trace of her. Investigators say she has never been seen since and have posted a video about her disappearance on social media in an effort to reach anyone with information about what happened to Diane Prevost.

Influential women honoured at annual awards ceremony:

Seven new names have been added to a list of more than 300 women who have been recognized for their contributions as part of the Influential Women of Northern Ontario Awards. The Northeast ceremony was held May 28 at the Steelworkers Hall. Family, co-workers and friends packed the hall for the special occasion. For more than two decades, the Influential Women of Northern Ontario Awards program (IW) has recognized the extraordinary accomplishments of women, awarding winners in the following categories:  Executive, Entrepreneur and Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Aboriginal Leadership, Tradeswoman of the Year and Influential Community Trailblazer. The event also acknowledges a young leader through the presentation of the Influential Woman Essay Scholarship. This year, 13 women from communities across the north will be celebrated. Check out the full list of winners here.

Paramedic Week: Sudbury paramedics don't just respond to emergency calls these days:

The non-traditional roles paramedics employed by Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services have taken on in recent years were highlighted on May 28 during the launch of Paramedic Week. This year, the awareness week has the theme of Health, the Community and You, which highlights the expanding role of paramedics in the community as allied health professionals. Joseph Nicholls, chief/general manager of community safety with the City of Greater Sudbury, said each year in Sudbury, paramedics travel more than one million kilometers, responding to more than 30,000 emergency calls. Find out where you can check out a Paramedic Week event near you here.

Development charge rates increase as of July 1:

The City of Greater Sudbury’s development charge rates will increase July 1 and remain in effect until June 30, 2019. The rates include the final 2017 phased-in rate increase and are calculated in accordance with the Development Charges Act, City of Greater Sudbury By-Law 2014-151 and the inflationary adjustment of 3.5 per cent based on the Non-Residential Building Construction Price Index. The City of Greater Sudbury collects a development charge at the building permit stage to recover a portion of the growth-related costs to install and provide services, such as water, roads, emergency services and parks and recreation, to new development. Development charges are applied to all new residential and non-residential development, subject to certain terms, conditions and limited exemptions, as identified in the by-law.
