Sudbury celebrates Learning Disabilities Awareness Month

There are roughly 2,800 students in Sudbury identified as having a learning disability

Sudbury residents may have noticed the flags flying at the James Jerome Sports Complex earlier this month to indicate that October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month in Greater Sudbury.

Organizers say this is a time to see, to understand and to appreciate those in our communities who might have a learning disability but still contribute to the overall success of our society.

Along with the flag raising event, the organizers said no less than 2080 small flags representing the total number of students who have been identified with a learning disability within our school system were planted along Paris Street.

Mary-Liz Warwick, a student success and transition navigator at Cambrian College, said she was pleased to be named honourary chair for 2022.

“Students with a learning disability are not only intelligent, they are also very creative. With proper accommodations they can excel in their educational pursuits. The goal of bringing awareness to learning disabilities is to ensure that every student is equipped for success throughout their schooling.”

As part of Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, the LDAS is hosting events to celebrate. This includes the opportunity for families to cheer on the Sudbury Wolves on Friday October 14th, with great seating at the game designated for LDA Sudbury, said the organizers
