Hey! What is going on? It has been an
interesting week.
It began with "Avoid a Tax Hike!" The council
usually begins the budget process and debate with a suggestion
taxes will go 10 or 15 percent over the previous year. It is
refreshing but a little bit scary that it might happen.
Although if council tells its hard-working
staff to eliminate any low-priority political projects and
begin a drive for more efficiencies, it might just work.
So,
let's see if the council does less talk/talk
and consult/consult, maybe there could be a long-term plan to
go with results. I hope for the common good of the City of
Greater Sudbury, we might get a break.
Then the announcement of "cold feet"
regarding the garbage or "waste-diversion program." It seems
too expensive to implement the recommendations of the committee
of councillors, staff, residents and a consulting firm. Well,
not to worry- the money spent should not be wasted. Why not
turn to a private contractor or waste salvage company, to
review the report and turn it into an investment? Other
municipalities have done it. The council may be on the cusp of
an innovation to save money and provide a good service. After
all, private companies pay taxes, and employ people.
Then there is the "southern tunnel." Council
is right on. Do it. This project will spark growth in the South
End and increase commercial and residential growth. The tax
base will improve and provide the jobs the city needs. The
planning committee can then look at requests without the
environmental concerns that have held up development to
date.
That reminds me. The planning committee
should be composed of non-council members, who have some
knowledge of construction, planning and no political ward
baggage. But that's for another letter.
Then, speaking of politics. I hope council
will continue to lobby the "senior" levels of government for
funds to develop the city. But do it with class and no
vindictive approach. We are fortunate to have representatives
from the party in power. Let us show them and potential
businesses we have much to offer. Approach them in a positive
and northern manner.
