Premier McGuinty should be commended for
delivering on an election promise. The Liberal government
introduced legislation this week to hold Ontario elections on a
fixed date every four years, starting with the next election on
October 4, 2007.
It shows governments can act in the interest
of the people even when the party in power does not necessarily
benefit from it. It shows that principle can prevail over
short-term political strategy.
We hope McGuinty will continue to show
leadership on the other badly needed democratic reforms,
including electoral reform.
