Seniors and businesses held hostage on Elgin Street

For five months, the occupants of the north end of Elgin Street have been at the mercy of Sudbury Public Works Department.

A planned upgrade to water has been one of the best examples of how badly Sudbury handles infrastructure. Areas of the road have been dug up and left unattended for days if not weeks.

Proper access to Christ the King Seniors residence has not been available to paramedic services. Seniors with walking aids have not been able to cross the street due to the poor condition of the intersection barring them from making their trips to Shoppers Drug Mart and other services in the area.

Access to businesses and residences has been limited due to a six-foot-high fence run down the middle of the sidewalk, the length of the street. This fence was installed at the end of August, three weeks before work began on an addition to the project by Hydro.

Now the water is being turned off during business hours with less than 24 hours notice.

Calls to the city have fallen on deaf ears. When confronting a job supervisor, it was suggested that the businesses move to a better location.

I have been at my location for almost 25 years. Is this how the city feels about small businesses?

The number of days work was being done are far outnumbered by the days when everything was left unattended.

Five months and no end in sight. Maybe instead of ripping up bits of the entire city, they should finish a project before they start another.

We are terribly frustrated and want the people of Sudbury to know.
