I am writing about the United Steelworkers of
America's Young Worker Awareness Campaign. Each April, a group
of energetic and knowledgeable instructors from the Sudbury
area work diligently toward the education and welfare of all
young workers.
In the last two weeks of April, coinciding
with the Worker Day of Mourning April 28, we enter high schools
to address senior and co-op students and discuss with them
their legal rights and the responsibilities that of the owner,
the employer and the worker as set out in the Occupational
Health and Safety Act as well as other pertinent information. A
representative from Inco attends the presentation to discuss
the importance of safety in the workplace from an employer's
point of view.
The health and safety of our youth has been
in the past, and will always be of extremely high importance to
us.
