Over 200 art pieces from 90 artists drew crowds to Le Nouveau Louvre, an art exhibit and fundraiser Saturday, Nov. 28, at La Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario, 174 Elgin Street.

"This year we have the largest crowd ever," Nicole Poulin, assistant director of the francophone gallery. At this fundraiser though, art from anglophone and francophone artists was on display.

"We even have art from as far away as Mexico," Poulin said. All pieces were being sold for $150. The artist will receive $100 and the gallery will obtain $50 from the purchase price.

The annual event is important to the gallery.

"Last year we sold 85 pieces of art, half those that were displayed." Poulin said.

Volunteer Gérald Beaulieu said after the opening reception that 48 art pieces were sold, or one quarter of all the selection.

"This year we had more framed works for sale. When you consider just framing a paining or picture can cost $100 to $150, then buying a piece from us for only $150 is a deal," Beaulieu exclaimed.

Musician Pierre Lafromboise said he was impressed by the variety of works on the walls this year.

"This year the art is more colourful, more pleasing to the eye."

He said he was impressed by the crowds at the event, the numbers of artists and those who love art.

"The community of artists is as large as the community of musicians here in the city. There is as much creativity as in the musical community."

Lafromboise plays with the Rubes and other local bands. He said he noticed that the creative community, whether artists or musicians, tend to support each other in Greater Sudbury.

"I have been to Barrie and I noticed there that the musicians keep to themselves. Here there is more of a family atmosphere."

The exhibit and sale continues to Dec. 19. For more information, visit www.gn-o.org. Gallery hours are noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. Phone 673-4927.
