CAA urges motorists to drive safely

The lazy, hazy days of summer conjure up images of barbeques, beaches, and extremely busy roads and highways.

CAA North & East Ontario (CAANEO) is reminding motorists to exercise caution and care when on the roads this summer, whether it be a long distance road trip or a local drive through the neighbourhood.

"Summer driving brings with it several added distractions, as there are a lot of excited kids out enjoying their freedom on bikes, scooters, rollerblades, skateboards or on foot," said Ciara Cronin, Communications Specialist for CAANEO. "Motorists should always remain vigilant and be mindful of children running across the road or playing on the street."

In its continuing effort to promote safer roads and highways for all motorists, CAANEO has several helpful tips for staying safe on the road this summer.

- Besides children, it is also important to keep an eye out for cyclists and motorcyclists on the roads, as these small vehicles can sometimes be hard to spot.  Furthermore, with more pedestrians out enjoying the sunshine and warm weather, motorists should drive slowly through residential areas and watch for activity on the side of the road.

- Additionally, when planning a weekend getaway or long distance road trip, remember that tourists and vacationers make the highways busier than usual, especially on weekends. As with any other time of year, staying calm and applying safe driving practices are the best ways to avoid collisions and keep you and your passengers safe.  Avoid speeding, tailgating, sudden braking or accelerating, and try to limit any distractions while driving.

- When you're packing your car for vacation, make sure any camping or outdoor equipment is securely tied down.
Ensure that none of your gear is blocking your view of the road and drive slowly if you're carrying a lot more baggage than usual, as stopping times can be greatly increased by added weight.

- The warm weather and long days also mean there is an increased amount of construction on Ontario roads and highways.  Be prepared to stop or slow down in construction zones, and always be aware of workers on the side of the roadway.

-  Great weather, sunshine and time off provides several opportunities for getting together with friends and family.  If you're going to have a few drinks at a pool party or barbeque, make sure to designate a driver or plan to take a cab or public transportation home.  There is a marked rise in accidents involving impaired drivers in the summer months as compared to any other time of year, so use common sense and never drink and drive.
