Cano to perform at Earthquake Relief concert in Sudbury

Earthquake Relief, a benefit concert for the people in Peru, South America, takes place Saturday, Oct. 13 at St. Andrew's United Church, 111 Larch St. at 7 pm.

The event is organized by Hispanic American Association of Sudbury.

Performing are Le Groupe 17, Stephane Paquette and Patricia Cano and Carlos Bernardo.

"Thousands are people were affected by an 8.5 Richter scale quake Aug. 15, 2007  and many are still homeless. Schools are still closed in the affected area due to structural damage," said Patricia Cano, whose family is originally from Peru. She will be singing samba to Afro-Peruvian music and accompanied by guitarist Carlos Bernardo from Rio De Janeiro Argentina.

Cano who has toured as a singer with Thomson Highway recently performed with him at the Orillia Opera House. She lived in Paris, France between 2002 and 2006, where she met Bernardo.

"Carlos and I hit it off performing and now we are a duo," she said.

Stephane Paquette and Le Groupe 17, from MacDonald Cartier will be performing in French.

"Stephane is a great musician and singer/songwriter. Le Groupe 17 are a pop jazz troupe,"  she said. "We hope the people of Greater Sudbury come out to lend their support to  the people of Peru and have a great time too," she said.

Traditional Korean Percussion, Brazilian and Afro-Peruvian songs will be performed. Peruvian empanadas and cookies will be sold at intermission said Cano.
