CRCS Recreation and Saturn of Sudbury pitched in with the City of Greater Sudbury to replace the play structure that was torched in mid-June.

Westmount Community Centre supporters unveiled a new playground structure Saturday.

The old structure had been torched in mid-June.
CRCS Recreation built a new structure and also donated a portion of the building cost.

"This was devastating for children in our community, especially considering the time of year that it happened," said Jeff Birmingham, president of the Westmount Community Centre, which is located in New Sudbury.

"Our company approached the city and suggested that we take this project on," said Chris Sheridan, president of CRCS Recreation.

"The city only had so much insurance money to spend, so CRCS donated a substantial amount of time and money to build the new structure."

Saturn of Sudbury also donated a portion of the money through their Kid's Space program.
"We decided to turn a negative into a positive and build a better structure in its place," said Sheridan.

"The main focus was to create a play structure out of metal to eliminate future arsons," said Melissa Sheridan, Chris's daughter and designer of the structure.

"Because of our use of metal, we positioned the structure to eliminate the direct north and south exposure of sun on the slides."

The ribbon cutting ceremony took place Saturday, along with a number of events, including a barbecue provided by Saturn, that marked the "beginning of new life for the park," said Chris Sheridan.

"We like being involved," said Chris Scagnetti, owner of Saturn of Sudbury. "Over the years we have donated tens of thousands of dollars to the community, including being involved with building six other parks in Sudbury."

Scagnetti said that it is up to the local business owners to get involved with the community any way they can, due to an increase in municipal budget cuts.
