St. Stephens on the Hill Church members are creating sleeping mats out of milk bags for third world countries. Church member Sheryn Healey heard about the project last October from several groups in southern Ontario.

Sudbury News - Creating sleeping mats out of milk bags A local dairy, who changed the design of their bags, donated 14 cases of 2,400 outer milk bags that were obsolete. Many bags have been collected by members of the community. Healey recommends turning the bags inside out to dry them before folding them. The bags are cut into strips, linked together, then rolled up into a ball before crocheting them into mats. Mats are crocheted from milk bags because bugs don't like plastic, they dry easily and they won't disintegrate.

Members of the community including Parkside Older Adult Centre members, crocheted 25 mats that will be shipped to Burlington before being shipped to countries like Haiti, Mexico, Honduras and Africa.

Sheryn Healey will be teaching people how to make these mats, May 6, at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. at St. Stephens on the Hill church on Lauzon St. All you need to bring are sharp scissors, a number 8 or 10 crochet hook and milk bags if you have them. For more information phone Sheryn at 566-2933 or 524-3139.
