Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault will plant an apple tree at one of Sudbury's community gardens on May 22 to highlight the launch of a new program being co-ordinated by Eat Local Sudbury.

The tree will be one of 76 fruit and nut trees planted in 16 community gardens in the city in a program funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF).

“This tree represents a new beginning,” Thibeault said. “The Fruit For All program will enhance the great work being done in the community by East Local Sudbury. I am very pleased that the Ontario Trillium Foundation is able to support it.”

Trillium provided a three-year, $145,000 grant to Eat Local Sudbury will be used for staffing, program costs and to support volunteers and landowners in their quest to build a sustainable food system for Greater Sudbury. Tree Canada's Edible Trees program, which is sponsored by Loblaw, Silk and Telus, will fund the planting initiative.

The tree-planting program is being co-ordinated by Eat Local Sudbury under its Fruit For All project. Learn more about Fruit For All here.

“Essentially, the program connects people with too much fruit in their yard with those who can make good use of it,” said James Morin, Eat Local Sudbuty co-chair.

Sign up to volunteer for the program or to arrange to have your fruit trees harvested at fruitforall.ca or call 521-6717 ext. 105.

Portions of the fruit will be donated to community food programs or to volunteers and donors.

Up to 25 per cent of the product might be kept by Fruit for All to help with funding once the three-year grant runs out.
