Dr. Marla Shapiro coming to Sudbury

Dr. Marla Shapiro, the health and medical expert for CTV's CanadaAM and National News, is coming to Sudbury in April to talk with parents about the consequences and challenges of battling the childhood obesity epidemic.

As well, she will discuss the risks associated with Type II diabetes. The event is specifically targeted at parents with children ages eight and nine.

While parents attend the talk with Dr. Shapiro, children will be able to participate in activities, learn about healthy food choices, and hear about the benefits of physical activity.

Dr. Shapiro has waded through the constant barrage of medical research and has disseminated the most sensible medical information needed to make smart health care decisions, a press release stated. Trained in Family Medicine and certified by the Canadian College of Family Practice, Dr. Shapiro is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto and is in private practice.

The event will take place April 1 from 7-8 p.m., at Lockerby Composite School, located at 1391 Ramsey View Court.

Registration for this event will close on March 25 and is limited to 300 adults and 50 children. It is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration forms can be found at www.nosm.ca .
