The Estaire-Wanup Volunteer Fire Brigade is raising funds through its fourth annual festival, Music on the Grass.

According to a press release from event co-ordinator and fire chief Gord Hall, Music on the Grass is run entirely by volunteers.

“The musicians play for free and all of the proceeds have gone to the building fund for Estaire-Wanup Volunteer Fire Brigade's new firehall,” Hall stated.

The fire brigade covers several unincorporated townships, which means there is no municipal government to provide funding to the brigade.

Hall said cities receive funding from the government to help with fire services, but because of the lack of an incorporated town, the volunteer brigade can't access those avenues.

All of its funding comes from donations and fundraising events like Music on the Grass.

Country, rock, folk, gospel and bluegrass performers will play at 300 Elbow Lake Rd. in Estaire on Aug. 14.

Since the festival began in 2007, it has been growing steadily, Hall said. The festival grew from an a plan to host a small outdoor show, and the came together in less than a month.

About 100 people were in attendance at the first festival. Last year, more than 300 people were there.

“(Last year) we added food vendors for the first time, and we provided some rough camping sites,” Hall stated. “The stage was a little larger and the sound equipment grew.”

This year, Bend of Elbow, Bonita Mercer, Mag River, Katz, The Rivets, Dan Lalonde, Cynthia and Elizabeth and TattooU will perform. Dawgs, Patticakes and Nanna's Kettle Corn will be on site selling food, but people are still encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and snacks.

Tents will be on hand to provide guests shelter from sun or rain.

Admission to Music on the Grass is $20.  Kids under 10 get in free, and camping spots can be reserved for $10 per night.
