One of the best fiddlers in Canada, Scott Woods, and his band
are coming to the Falconbridge Recreation Centre Friday, Nov. 2
at 7 pm and Saturday, Nov. 3 at 2 pm.
Tickets are $15 with proceeds going to the Falconbridge
Wellness Centre, located inside the recreation centre.
The band has been here before a number of times, said organizer
John Monaghan.
"Every time Scott Woods comes to town, they sell out - the
music is that good," said Monaghan.
Woods, from Fergus, is two-time winner of the Canadian Open
Fiddle Contest, two time winner of the Canadian Grand Masters
Fiddling Championships, and Canadian Fiddle Entertainer of the
Year in 1999.
He has performed throughout Canada, the United States and
Europe.
He studied classical violin from the age of four, passed down
as an art through six generations of his family.
Woods so typifies the fiddle that he played the part of
Canadian icon Don Messer in Memories of Don Messer's Jubilee,
which toured Canada for seven years.
With Woods is his mother, Carolyn, on organ. She started
playing piano at the age of four, then later studied classical
piano at the Royal Conservatory of music in Toronto. She began
chording for old-time fiddle music at the age of eight.
Woods' sister, Kendra, plays violin. She was three-time winner
of the Canadian Open Duet fiddling class with her brother.
Gini Williams is the vocalist. She has been performing with
Scott for 15 years. She also played the part of Marg Osbourne
in Memories of Don Messer's Jubilee in 1999. Her daughter,
Meryl, 16, will be performing step dance routines. She began
her dancing career at the age of three with ballet lessons and
is currently studying with Canadian Open Step Dancing Champion
Chanda Leahy.
"Everyone's looking for Scott and his group to come up. Tickets
will sell out before the show," said Monaghan.
Over 600 flyers have gone out targetting seniors especially, he
said.
"We expect people to come from as far as Manitoulin Island,
Levack, Onaping and some from the east of the city, but mostly
from the communities that make up Nickel Centre-Garson,
Falconbridge, Coniston, Skead and Wahnapitae," said Monaghan.
