Montréal-based artist Karine Giboulo will give Greater Sudbury residents the chance to have a “Godzilla's-eye view” of two very different worlds at the Galerie du nouvel-Ontario.

After visiting homes in Village Démocratie, a slum in Haiti, Giboulo brought back the images to recreate scenes of contrasting worlds.

A press release stated that the colourful décor used by Giboulo is made from recycled materials.

The project is in its first phase. There are currently about 90 figures on the scene. Each one is hand-made and hand-painted by Giboulo. Eventually, it will consist of 500 figures, representing people going about their daily business.

“I am building an imaginary city that brings together north and south, opulence and hunger, showing the contrast between two realities, illustrating, materializing and questioning the 'invisible bonds' that attach us all to each other,” Giboulo stated in the press release.

Village démocratie: phase 1 will be on display from June 4 to 30. The opening reception is scheduled for June 4 at 5 p.m. For more information, contact the Galerie du nouvel-Ontario at www.gn-o.org or phone 673-4927.
