To help Canadians celebrate Nutrition Month®, Breakfast for Learning introduces Smart Start - a resource for parents, children and student nutrition programs that helps promote healthy eating.

Based on the new Canada's Food Guide, Smart Start provides Canadians with a quick reference wheel to help children, ages 4 to 18, eat their recommended servings of each of the four food groups each day.  The nutrition education tool also helps families decipher serving sizes and provides helpful tips for parents to ensure kids eat well to learn well.

"Studies show that students that maintain a nutritious diet, perform better in school," said Carol Dombrow, Registered Dietitian, Breakfast for Learning, in a news release. "Developed and reviewed by Breakfast for Learning Nutrition Education Committee, Smart Start can be posted in classrooms, or on the fridge at home, to help have a positive influence on life-long eating behaviours."

In addition, Breakfast for Learning invites children to set out on another nutrition adventure with new playing cards for Staying Alive! Lost in the Mountains -  an adventure board game for kids, where good nutrition means survival.  The board game teaches the value of healthy foods and shows kids how their food choices effect how they work, learn and play.

"Staying Alive! Lost in the Mountains is a great way to get kids excited and learning about healthy eating," said Dombrow. "New playing cards, available for download on Breakfast for Learning's Online Club site, will help keep children engaged in the game and provide a new adventure each time they play!"

Breakfast for Learning is the leading non-profit organization solely dedicated to child nutrition in Canada. Working to ensure every child in Canada attends school well-nourished and ready to learn, Breakfast for Learning helps support and sustain over 2,300 school-based breakfast, lunch and snack programs, nourishing thousands of children each school day.
