Greater Sudbury-filmed movie Zombie Town opening this weekend

There are plenty of Greater Sudbury sites to spot in the trailer for the movie Zombie Town, which is opening in theatres this weekend

The Greater Sudbury-filmed movie Zombie Town is opening this weekend, and there are expected to be plenty of local sites to spot throughout the movie’s 93-minute runtime.

A house in Garson, a block of Elgin Street, and the Sudbury Secondary School auditorium can all be seen in a trailer for the movie, which was released earlier this month.

The movie stars comedy giants Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase, who were joined by fellow seasoned actor Henry Czerny, who is also in two other movies released this year, including Scream VI and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.

Scott Thompson and Bruce McCulloch of the comedy series The Kids in the Hall are also in the cast alongside teenaged leads Marlon Kazadi and Madi Monroe.

Sudbury.com visited the production during one of the final days of filming in September 2022, when crews were at a residential property in Garson.

“If I heard about another movie shooting up here that I could be in I’d rocket right up here, no problem,” Aykroyd told gathered media.

“Sudbury is really impressive for the number of performing arts centres and theatres and programs for learning in the performing arts,” he said. “I wish I’d been here for longer, but they kind of crammed my stuff and Chevy’s into the last week.

“You’ve got really friendly people who are most welcoming and glad to have us, and we’re glad to be here.”

Chase was in full comedic mode during the duo’s media scrum, alternating between declaring his intention to relocate to Greater Sudbury and his desire to leave as quickly as possible.

“Jesus, I mean, I live in a real place,” he said to laughter from those who gathered

Czerny had previously worked in the Greater Sudbury area to film the 2019 movie, The Curse of Buckout Road, and said he was disappointed to only be in the area for less than two weeks this time around.

He told Sudbury.com at the time that it was a particular blessing to work with Aykroyd.

“He has a quality to be particular with the language and absolutely universal at the same time,” he said of Aykroyd. “He doesn’t say anything that doesn’t go through his gut first.”

According to imdb.com, the premise of the Zombie Town is as follows: “Amy (Monroe) and Mike (Kazadi) unearth a centuries-old curse when they decide to watch an exclusive film reel. The duo must track down an infamous filmmaker (Akroyd) and navigate a town of hungry zombies to save the world.”

The movie is based on a book by children’s author R.L. Stine, and has been classified as “comedy, horror, mystery.”

Zombie Town is screening at SilverCity Sudbury Cinemas this weekend, with showtimes available by clicking here.
