Groundhog Day and 17 other classic films coming to the big screen

Get your fix of great 80s and 90s flicks at SilverCity Sudbury next month during the Flashback Film Fest

Groundhog Day is coming up, and you know what that means — it's time to watch the 1993 Bill Murray film of the same name, about a TV weatherman who repeats the same day over and over.

Thanks to Cineplex's eighth annual Flashback Film Fest, you have the chance to watch “Groundhog Day” at SilverCity Sudbury this year.

You'll have to wait until the day after the groundhog sees his shadow (or doesn't) to get your big screen Bill Murray fix, though.

That's because the Flashback Film Fest starts Feb. 3 — the day after Groundhog Day — and runs until Feb. 9. The film festival, which is playing in 24 cities across the country, features 17 classic films.

Besides Groundhog Day, which is the festival's opener, the full lineup includes Air Force One, Blade Runner, Blood Simple, Fargo, The Fifth Element, Fight Club, The Fugitive, Heat, Jurassic Park, Legend, The Princess Bride, Pulp Fiction, The Running Man, Shallow Grave, Starship Troopers and Trainspotting.

There's truly something for every kind of movie fan. “We always listen to what fans say from previous years,” said Brad LaDouceur. “They're often asking for certain films.”

The lineup also depends to some extent on what's been re-mastered and converted into a digital format that can be played in modern movie theatres.

“We're excited that everyone is looking forward so far to the movies we've picked,” LaDouceur said.

“Obviously we've seen some advanced ticket sales around 'Blade Runner' and 'Groundhog Day' and 'Princess Bride,' and we just encourage people to come on out and have a great night at the movies.”

Single tickets cost $7.99, but if you're seeing five or more films, the price goes down to $6.99 each. The package deal for all 17 films is $69.99, which works out to $4.11 per film.
