A large waistline due to excess abdominal fat is a major
risk factor for high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease
and stroke, warns the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
But a simple set of measurements performed in your home, using
a tape measure, can sound the alarm and help alert healthcare
professionals to the degree of risk.
"A larger waist circumference is an indication of overall risk
that demands immediate attention," said Dr. Robert Ross, Heart
and Stroke Foundation spokesperson.
"If your measurement puts you in the danger zone, go see your
family doctor as soon as possible to get your other risk
factors checked out."
The tale of the tape reveals that men whose waists measure more
than 40 inches are at high risk for heart health problems. For
women, the risk escalates at 35 inches.
The Heart and Stoke Foundation, Dairy Farmers of Canada and
Loblaw Companies Limited have teamed up to bring people a free
Heart&Stroke Healthy Waists tape measure.
