Warmer weather means the beginning of outdoor activities for many children and adults.

Warmer weather means the beginning of outdoor activities for many children and adults.

The Sudbury Regional Hospital's Emergency and Trauma Programs providing parents and caregivers with the following safety tips to reduce the risk of injury:

When participating in any wheeled activity, such as biking or in-line skating, always wear a helmet. Although broken bones can be repaired, a brain injury is permanent. Adults should be role models and wear helmets, as well. Ensure helmets fit properly and meet safety standards, and know  the rules of the road.

Children cannot accurately judge the speed or distance of oncoming traffic, have shorter attention spans, can be impulsive and behave unpredictably in traffic situations. Teach children to always follow traffic signals and that a road or sidewalk curb means stop. Review how to safely cross a road that isn't controlled by lights with children. When crossing any road, children should be informed to always continue looking while they cross.

Motorists are reminded to be extra careful. Warmer weather means an increase in pedestrians and children in playgrounds and green spaces. Be aware of surroundings at all times and always stay focused on the road and activity on the roadside.
