Toronto jazz singer Shannon Butcher will be performing at the Fromagerie Elgin, on Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20.
The cheese store, located at the corner of Elgin and Cedar Streets, is know for stocking up to 100 types of cheeses, said owner Hazel Ecclestone. She considers her location, across from Market Square, an arts venue as well.
“I can seat up to 40 people here comfortably. I consider this a place for food, art and culture,” said Ecclestone.
Last Monday she featured Cree playwright Tomson Highway and jazz singer Patty Cano. She said her venue was full for that performance.
“I like to have jazz, classical and eclectic music here. I had the Silver Birch Quartet here a year and a half ago.”
Butcher contacted Fromagerie Elgin.
“I got this email from her. She said a friend of hers, Angie Nussey, said I had this great venue which has hosted some wonderful concerts.”
Nussey is originally from Lively and is now based in Toronto. Butcher said she would be on her way to northwestern Ontario the week of Oct. 16 and wondered if she could perform with Ross MacIntyre who plays upright bass and six string electric guitar.
“It was a crazy time for me but I agreed. She said her debut album, Words We Both Could Say, released last year, was getting a lot of play on the CBC Radio Two music station,” said Ecclestone.
“She also has performed on national television on Canada AM. Itunes Canada has her as one of the top ten new jazz artists.”
