How should I answer the dreaded interview question, "What is your weakness?"

It is a good idea to be prepared for the inevitable questions about what you are lacking.

The employer is checking whether you can openly discuss your shortfalls and to get a handle on how you deal with a challenging question.

Most informed employers will expect you to turn a negative into a positive, such as "My weakness is that I am a perfectionist, but that can also be considered a strength because I must do everything well."

A different and perhaps more honest answer would be to provide a true weakness you have, that is workable.

For example, "I haven't used Excel as much as I'd like, however, I am prepared to attend a course to improve my skills in this area."

The most important thing to remember is to be prepared, especially for the questions you dread.
